A Step Above the Rest
As time goes by fire apparatus just keep growing larger. Every year brings bigger engines, bigger tanks, bigger ladders, bigger cabs with more wiggle room, and bigger compartments to hold more and more equipment. Some trucks are even designed to do the work of two. They're amazing, they're innovative, they help you do the job better. But if they don't have vehicle steps, that size can come with a hidden price, and if you're not careful it could be your body that's left footing the bill.
On a modern fire apparatus, personnel are often required to climb up or drop down a distance of up to 2 feet in order to get in and out of the cab. 2 feet! 22-24 inches. If your apparatus applies outriggers that height could climb even higher. To put that in perspective, the average height of a dining room table is 28-30 inches. Imagine climbing up and jumping off a small dining room table multiple times per day. Seems crazy, right? Well a distance like that can also be dangerous, increasing your risk of strains and serious injury.
To protect yourself and lower the risk of injury, consider adding vehicle steps to your department's apparatus. QUIC-STEP Horizontal Vehicle Step
Requires a smaller mounting surface.
The Horizontal Vehicle Step, Model HVS-1, requires only 3" spacing to clear components, keeping it tucked closer to the apparatus; ideal for use on vehicles with lower clearances. When wired to the door interlock system the HVS-1 extends straight out when the door is opened and retracts when the door is closed.
